Ever get the feeling that it’s YOU somehow that’s limiting your music career?
You’re good at music, and you know what you need to do, but you’re just not doing it?
OTHER folks are doing it… why not you?
This ties in to the Single Biggest Myth In Music. You hear it all the time.
“It’s all about the music, man.” As if that’s end of story.
Well, yeah, sure, right. YES. In an ideal world.
But unfortunately it tends to get a little messier than that. After all, who made the music? Whose responsibility IS this wonderful creation?
The fact is, the REALITY is, like it or not, YOU are bound up in your music. And you don’t want to bring it down.
How do you bring it down? Well let’s put it this way, are Bieber, Kanye, GaGa, Neil, Jagger, Beyoncé, Snoop, you name it, thinking any of the following thoughts?
1. “There’s no money in the music business.”
2. “It’s HARD to make it in the music industry.”
3. “It’s impossible to get heard by anyone who can make a difference in my music career.”
4. “My parents will disown me if I become a full-time musician.”
5. “People are never going to pay attention to me.”
6. “No one’s going to show up at my gig.”
7. “Nobody’s going to want to be with me if I’m a musician.”
8. “I can’t have a family if I’m gonna be a musician.”
9. “I don’t have enough time to make it in the music business.”
10. “If it hadn’t been for music, I’d have a real job by now.”
11. “It’s selfish to pursue a music career.”
12. “I’m too old to get up on stage.”
13. “People are going to laugh at me.”
14. “It’s not worth it.”
15. “I’m not ready enough to launch.”
16. “I don’t have enough money to make it in the music business.”
17. “I’ll never know enough people to make it in the music business.”
18. “It’s selfish to pursue a music career.”
19. “I’m not good enough.”
20. “I don’t have the right looks.”
21. “I don’t have enough charisma.”
22. “There’s too much to learn.”
23. “Musicians are losers.”
OUCH! Is any of this stuff even true?
These ideas can impact your music career for a few reasons:
- What you think and believe, and feel really, is going to impact what you do, how much you do, and how well you do it, including making music and getting it out there, and it’ll get in the way of you connecting with your audience when you’re on stage.
- What you think and feel about the music business is going to impact the opportunities that you notice, and there are lots of opportunities you’re probably not noticing.
- If music is your dream, then having limiting thoughts and beliefs about music is going to make you confused and frustrated.
Because your dream’s coming from a place of:
“This feels good. This is rewarding. Music is important. Music is valuable. It’s the only thing that’s ever really mattered.”
It’s coming from a place of connection that’s emblazoned on you physically, emotionally, even spiritually. It’s an awareness you’ve got, and it’s not going away anytime soon. That’s the thing about awareness – there’s no going back.
But, if you’ve also picked up negative and limiting beliefs about music along the way, like for example, “I can’t have a family and be a musician”, or “It’s hard to make it in the music industry”, well, these beliefs put you at odds with yourself.
And it’s confusing and FRUSTRATING. It can even turn you cynical.
You get sidetracked. You try and believe in a lot of different dreams but end up finding yourself right back where you started, not quite ready to launch, wondering what the hell happened?
You believe in your dream, but… when push comes to shove… well, you tell me.
99% of musicians will never make it, right??

Here are your next steps:
1. One book that deals with a lot of this stuff is called The Artist’s Way by Julia Cameron. I can’t recommend it enough. By the time I got through it I’d written a new album and that, quite frankly, is priceless.
